Our Story

From a moment to a movement

One simple question in 2018

About 8 years ago, in 2018, something extraordinary happened on an ordinary morning.

Like any other day, I went to drop my son off at his school – Kings Monkton School in Cardiff. As I was saying goodbye, one of my son’s Welsh friends noticed me and asked, ‘Who is that?’

My son replied, ‘He is my father’.

The boy then asked, ‘What does he do?’

My son answered, ‘He is a solicitor’.

The boy looked surprised, and said ‘Oh! I didn’t know Indian man could be a solicitor. I thought they were either doctors, or taxi drivers or ran corner shops’.

It was a moment of pure innocence – no malice at all. Yet it revealed something deeper: how limited exposure can lead to collective and societal ignorance, which in turn breeds stereotypes and quietly hinder social co-hesion and integration.

A moment of reflection

That simple conversation stayed with me. As a first-generation immigrant in Wales, I realised there are often not enough opportunities for people to truly know one another — to understand the diverse cultures and heritages that make up modern Wales.

In February 2018, Mrs. Tamasree Mukhopadhyay — then a passionate charity manager and equality advocate — Mr. Paul Norton, the Principal of Kings Monkton School and a proud champion of diversity and inclusion, and I reflected on that exchange. Together, we recognised the need to create more spaces where people from different racial and cultural backgrounds could meet, learn, and share their stories — to see each other not as strangers, but as neighbours.

The birth of KIRAN Cymru

Out of that moment of reflection came a new vision — a Wales where diversity isn’t just acknowledged or taught as a theoretical subject, but lived, included in our daily lives, and genuinely celebrated.

KIRAN Cymru was born to:

  • Engage: Connecting intergenerational people from diverse backgrounds actively and meaningfully through arts, culture, heritage and sports.

  • Educate: Promoting understanding and knowledge about different culture and heritage.

  • Empower individuals — Promoting Human Rights and Social Justice to the highest standard and by enabling merginalised people to have a voice in community, society and public life.

What began as a simple conversation about misunderstanding has grown into a movement for belonging — connecting thousands of people across Wales every year.

A journey, NOT a destination

Today, KIRAN Cymru stands as a bridge — linking communities, stories, and generations.

We are proud to help build an anti-racist, inclusive Wales, where every child grows up believing that their future isn’t defined by their background, but by their dreams.

“From that one question — Can an Indian be a solicitor?
we found our answer in unity, empathy, and shared humanity.”
— Anirban Mukhopadhyay, Founder & CEO, KIRAN Cymru.
